Canopy: how Atomhawk is investing in the future of visual development

The future of visual development won’t be shaped by technology alone. It will be shaped by the people, knowledge and relationships that define how creativity evolves over time.

At Atomhawk, we’ve always believed that supporting the future of our industry requires more than delivering exceptional work for our clients. It demands investment in people, the sharing of knowledge and a commitment to contributing positively to the creative ecosystem around us. It requires us to create opportunities not only for the next generation of creatives, but also for the experienced professionals who will guide, mentor and inspire them. That’s why we’ve created Canopy.

Canopy is Atomhawk’s outreach and industry engagement programme. It brings together educational partnerships, thought leadership, community initiatives and knowledge-sharing activities under a single vision: to help cultivate the future of visual development through meaningful connections between education, industry and community. As a key pillar of Atomhawk’s strategic ecosystem, Canopy helps transform knowledge into capability, capability into influence and influence into long-term value.

Just as a canopy supports growth beneath it, Canopy exists to provide the environment in which creative talent, professional capability and industry collaboration can thrive. Because building a sustainable creative industry isn’t the responsibility of any one studio, university or organisation. It’s something we achieve together.

Why Canopy exists

Experience builds confidence and capability. Unfortunately, gaining that experience is often one of the biggest challenges facing emerging creatives. Many graduates enter the industry with strong technical skills but limited opportunities to develop the communication, collaboration, presentation and commercial awareness that professional environments demand.

At the same time, experienced creatives possess invaluable knowledge but often have limited opportunities to develop leadership, mentoring and advocacy skills outside of project delivery. Canopy exists to bridge that gap. It creates opportunities for aspiring creatives to gain meaningful exposure to industry practices while empowering current professionals to become mentors, speakers, educators and leaders. In doing so, it strengthens not only individual careers, but the wider creative ecosystem.

We’ve seen first-hand the benefits this creates for our team. Whether presenting to students, mentoring aspiring artists, leading workshops or representing Atomhawk at industry events, these experiences help individuals build confidence, broaden their perspectives and develop skills that enhance both their careers and the studio as a whole.

Cultivating future talent

Atomhawk has intentionally focused on a small number of strategic educational partnerships that create meaningful and lasting impact. One of our longest-standing relationships is with Teesside University, right on our doorstep in the North East of England. Through talks, portfolio reviews, mentoring and collaborative projects, students gain exposure to professional workflows and real-world industry challenges while our team develops valuable experience in leadership and knowledge-sharing.

Internationally, our annual collaboration with New3dge in Paris has become a highlight of the calendar. Through structured client-style projects, Atomhawk artists mentor aspiring concept artists throughout a professional development pipeline, from briefing and exploration through to final presentation. Students gain invaluable insight into industry expectations, while our team develops critical art direction, communication and feedback skills.

As Canopy continues to grow, we’re expanding our engagement with courses aligned to Atomhawk’s evolving disciplines, including:

• Concept Art and Visual Development
• Animation
• UI/UX Design
• Graphic Design
• Technical Art

These partnerships help ensure future talent is better prepared for the realities of professional creative work while maintaining strong connections between education and industry.

Developing today's creative leaders

The skills required to become a successful creative leader extend far beyond artistic ability. Communication, mentoring, strategic thinking, stakeholder management and public speaking are all increasingly important in today’s industry.

Through Canopy, our artists and designers have opportunities to:

• Deliver presentations and guest lectures
• Mentor students and graduates
• Lead workshops and collaborative projects
• Participate in portfolio reviews
• Represent Atomhawk at industry events
• Develop coaching and leadership skills

These experiences help transform talented practitioners into confident leaders. What’s particularly rewarding is seeing how quickly individuals grow when given opportunities to teach, support and advocate for others. The confidence gained through these engagements often translates directly back into stronger client relationships, improved communication and greater leadership capability within the studio.

The other person, seen from behind beneath the soft shade of a canopy, wears a maroon shirt and has a black strap.

Advancing thought leadership

A core ambition of Canopy is to ensure that Atomhawk actively contributes to the future of visual development rather than simply responding to it. Over more than fifteen years, our team has developed deep expertise across visual development, art direction, UI/UX, Technical Art, production, client collaboration and emerging technologies.

Canopy provides a framework for sharing that knowledge more widely and contributing to the conversations that shape our industry. Whether through articles, panel discussions, podcasts, university talks, conference presentations or roundtable discussions, we want to help create meaningful dialogue around topics that matter to creative professionals and studios alike.

Recent examples include participation in initiatives and events such as:

• GameNext
• XDS Table Topics
• Game Republic Student Showcase & Careers Conference
• Teesside University industry events
• Staffordshire University engagements
New3dge collaborative projects
• Industry panels and community discussions

Thought leadership isn’t simply about visibility. It’s about sharing experience, encouraging collaboration and creating opportunities for collective learning.

Creating and sharing knowledge

One of Canopy’s most important roles is helping transform experience into insight. Over more than fifteen years, Atomhawk has developed expertise across visual development, art direction, UI/UX, Technical Art, production and creative collaboration. Every project creates knowledge. The challenge is ensuring that knowledge extends beyond the teams directly involved. Canopy provides a framework for capturing, developing and sharing those insights through articles, conference talks, podcasts, workshops, roundtable discussions and other forms of thought leadership.

Increasingly, this also includes the creation of original content designed to contribute positively to industry conversations and help shape discussion around topics that matter to creative teams and studios. The goal is not simply to participate in conversations. It is to contribute meaningfully to them.

The discussion is hosted by Atomhawk and takes place beneath a broad canopy that adds to the event’s immersive atmosphere.

Strengthening the creative ecosystem

Some of the most exciting opportunities created through Canopy exist outside traditional industry boundaries. In recent years, Atomhawk has collaborated with organisations including Newcastle University, The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, North East Young Dads & Lads, and The National Trust to support initiatives focused on heritage, education and community engagement.

One example is Don’t Look Down, a project that evolved from relationships originally established through Newcastle University and artwork connected to The Realm, now available through The Baltic Shop.

Through subsequent collaborations with The National Trust and local partners, our team has contributed creative expertise to projects aimed at increasing awareness and appreciation of local heritage. These engagements have provided opportunities for our artists to participate in design-thinking workshops, visit historical sites, sketch on location and explore new approaches to storytelling and audience engagement.

More recently, these relationships have extended into projects such as Birds, Bees, Bikes & Trees, where Atomhawk has contributed artwork and creative support to community-focused initiatives.

These collaborations demonstrate the broader impact creativity can have when applied beyond commercial projects. They also give our people opportunities to broaden their experience, develop new skills and connect more deeply with the communities around them.

Looking ahead

Canopy is still evolving, but that’s exactly what makes it exciting. What began as a collection of educational partnerships has grown into something much broader: a framework for developing talent, building leadership capability, sharing knowledge and strengthening the creative ecosystem around us.

Over the coming years, we’ll continue deepening relationships with educational institutions, expanding thought leadership activities, investing in meaningful community initiatives and creating opportunities for our people to grow as mentors, advocates and leaders. Most importantly, we’ll continue investing in the future of visual development. Not just through the work we create, but through the people we support, the knowledge we share and the conversations we help shape.

We believe the future of our industry will be defined by more than technology or tools. It will be defined by the quality of ideas, the strength of relationships and the willingness of individuals and organisations to contribute to something larger than themselves.

Canopy is our commitment to that future.

A commitment to developing talent.

A commitment to sharing knowledge.

A commitment to strengthening the creative ecosystem that supports us all.

Because the future of visual development won’t be built by individual studios working in isolation. It will be built by the communities, partnerships and people who choose to grow together.
